For the fourth consecutive year, Air Europa, Air Europa Express, together with Air Europa Express, has joined the SkyTeam alliance's global challenge “The Aviation Challenge” (TAC) to contribute to generating a measurable impact for a more sustainable future for the aviation industry. The two airlines participated in this initiative with two flights in which they implemented various improvements aimed at making operations more efficient, thereby contributing to the development of a more sustainable industry. Air Europa Express linked Madrid and Las Palmas on September 29 with a flight optimized to reduce emissions and environmental impact, while on October 22 Air Europa operated its connection between the Spanish capital and Sao Paulo using similar advances aboard a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the most advanced and efficient aircraft in its category.
In both cases, the aircraft were fueled with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the most efficient route was calculated to minimize in-flight emissions. On board, reusable containers were used instead of plastic wrapping, providing each passenger with a cup for multiple uses, applying waste segregation at all times to ensure proper waste treatment. To avoid the use of conventional means of transport, the crews, who received training on sustainability, were provided with an office strategically located to facilitate their access on board on foot, while, on the ground, towing and baggage transport operations were carried out with electric vehicles from Groundforce, Globalia's handling company.
In the case of the Air Europa Express flight, which operated a Boeing 737, a process was applied to configure a peer crew, while on the route to Brazil, amenity kits made from recycled airplane materials were distributed and the company's new emissions program was facilitated. This program provides passengers with information on the impact of emissions generated when flying and offers customers the opportunity to support certified projects through the purchase of carbon credits.
The Aviation Challenge
TAC is a global initiative designed to help accelerate sustainable innovation and shared learning in the aviation industry through friendly competition and measurable impact. Now in its fourth year, it has become a platform for real-world action, this year bringing together 23 airlines (some from outside the SkyTeam alliance) to test, implement and scale sustainable solutions in flight and ground operations. All of them have sought to make flights as sustainable as possible, while addressing key areas such as emissions reduction, fuel efficiency and waste management.
TAC's real goal goes beyond competition and operational performance: this project seeks to generate scalable solutions that can be implemented industry-wide to help create a more responsible and resilient future for global air travel and the world that connects with it.
